Young Alumnus

The Young Alumni Award is presented to alumni (within 20 years of their graduation) who have distinguished themselves through outstanding professional careers and/or outstanding contributions to community service.

 

2013 Young Alumnus Recipient

The Honorable Ben J. Miller, Jr.

Ben J. Miller, Jr graduated from North Georgia College in 1992 with a Bachelor of Science degree. At NGC he was a member of the Corps of Cadets, Sigma Chi Fraternity and the Saints Rifle Team, where he earned All-American status in marksmanship in 1990 and 1991.  Upon graduation, he was accepted and graduated from John Marshall Law School in Atlanta, Georgia in 1996. He was admitted to the State Bar of Georgia in 1996 where he was admitted to practice law in both the Georgia Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court of Georgia.

Since his admittance to the Georgia Bar, Ben has dedicated his legal career to advocating for Georgia’s most needy children. In 1996 he was appointed to serve as a Special Assistant Attorney General for the Upson County Department of Family and Children’s Services. In 2000 he was appointed as a part time Judge Pro Tempore of Juvenile Court for Upson County, Georgia. In July 2004 he was appointed as part time Associate Juvenile Court Judge for the entire Griffin Judicial Circuit. He served in this position until July 2008, when he was appointed as the presiding Judge for Juvenile Courts in the Griffin Judicial Circuit.

Judge Miller is very active in his community and is a member of the Upson County Historical Society, the Thomaston/Upson Arts Council and the Thomaston/Upson County Recreation Department. He also serves as a volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America. Ben is devoted to his family, career, and community, and continues to distinguish himself in all facets of his life and has always reflected well on North Georgia.

Candidates should be alumni within their first 20 years of graduation from North Georgia who have distinguished themselves through outstanding professional careers and/or outstanding contributions to community service. A maximum of one award is presented per year.
